Flixel for iOS Canabalt Open Source resources
Since the release of Canabalt and Flixel for iOS, there have been many news reports about the release, but very few resources dedicated to using the framework.
There are probably a few reasons for this. Flixel has a great community based around it’s Flash framework. It’s free. It’s open source, many people are adding custom add-ons and classes, including a great cave generator. These are all free to use, including the Flash SDK, and FlashDevelop which is one of the best IDEs I’ve ever used.
Conversely, developing for iOS is expensive and closed. A mac, an iDevice, a developer membership, is just not an option if you are a hobbyist (unless you are as crazy as me).
Let’s look at what has been made available so far.
Canabalt + Flixel for iOS. The official release by SemiSecret software. This is where to begin! Download and study this code. It’s fantastic.
Flixel iOS Template/Hello World. This is a blessing! If you want to make a clean Flixel project, download and build this! If you are using textureAtlases, there is a method you need to uncomment called preloadTextureAtlases.

What’s to come?
Community member Axcho is adding to the template by adding some class templates for FlxObject, FlxSprite and FlxGroup.
I hope to open source my shmup using Flixel for iOS as soon as it is finished.
A Flixel for iOS port of my game Picking Up Girls Is Hard When Your Car Is A BMX is in development.
